The omnidirectional pickup pattern and reduced outside noise pickup make lavaliere microphones the first choice for clear, single subject recordings

Shotgun microphones capture what they are aimed at.  These are great for use in mobile recording situations where a lavaliere isn’t practical, when capturing more than one subject and you only have a single input, or for capturing natural sound in an environment

On-camera microphones produce harsh sound and don’t discriminate well between the background noise and your subject’s voice.  Use when all else fails or you forgot to bring a microphone and have no other option.  However, be sure that the subject is within close range to the on-camera microphone.
