As you begin to experiment with different microphones and recording devices, keep a journal, or blog.  As you record a project, write down what microphone you used, how it was placed, and described how it sounded.  Was the subject’s voice clear?  Was there a lot of background noise coming through on the recording?  What would you do differently?  Would you use that set up again?  Through your entries, you’ll begin to develop a knowledge base of what works best in the various situations you encounter.
