The XLR connection is the most commonly used connection for microphones.

1/8” plugs are common on consumer level recording devices and on DSLRs. Some microphones are designed specifically for this input and can attach directly to the device.

Almost all lavaliere and all shotgun microphones require power to run. Make sure that the device you are using can provide 48v phantom power. As a backup, most of these types of microphones can also be powered by a AA battery.

You want your subject’s voice to fall between -12 and -6 decibels on your level meters. A good rule of thumb is to set the initial levels lower because people tend to get louder as they become more comfortable throughout the interview.
