One of the best ways to learn proper placement is to experiment on your own with friends, family, or classmates. Using the equipment provided to you, familiarize yourself with the way microphone placement effects sound quality by recording conversations with the microphone placed in various positions. As you review the playback, document your thoughts on the placement of the mic, keeping in mind how well the subject’s voice is isolated and if they sound too “distant” from the microphone or too close to the microphone. Bring your thoughts to your next class and discuss with your professor and classmate.
